The Summer of 2020

12.21.2020 by betsykelleher //

Reading Time: 4 minutes
Shelter at home inspiration. Green Adirondack chair and resin chair on a neatly trimmed lawn overlooking a lake. The Summer of 2020 by Betsy Kelleher.

This summer was for the birds—and I do mean birds, literally! Birdwatching was my Covid Silver Lining.

For years, I’ve believed God guided us to this particular location. The lake behind our back yard is lined with trees and tall grasses (the perfect habitat for all sorts of birds), and our back yard has an inspiring view (after I cut some of the tall grasses). This was the perfect place to shelter at home during a pandemic.

Soaring White Pelicans

If you’ve never watched pelicans flying, you’ve missed a magnificent sight!

American White Pelicans are one of the largest water birds in North America, standing five feet high with a nine-foot wingspan. Up close, they may seem strange-looking and awkward; but when flocks soar high in the sky, circling together in graceful unison, they produce a spectacular, choreographed dance. The sun touches them differently as they glide together in slow circles; one moment you see them as specks of white, then you see the black edges of their wings, and then suddenly they seem to disappear.

The Green Heron—A Fisherman

Green heron on post close up photographer Betsy Kelleher

My husband and I often sit in the back yard by the lake (with my camera). One recent morning this Green Heron made an appearance, lighting on a post about 15 feet from where we sat! Instead of being scared away by my camera, he stayed while I took a series of photos—and I learned something interesting.

In the Sky, It’s a Bird—An American Eagle!

Reading Time: 4 minutes
American Bald Eagle flying with full wing span. Photo by Betsy Kelleher with article on eagles and their habits.

It’s a thrill to sight an American Bald Eagle! Between December 1st and March 1st in our area, people travel to places near the Mississippi River just to catch a glimpse of our national bird. My husband and I live in a mobile home with a lake at our back yard, and I’ve seen an eagle at least five times without leaving home. I think there is a nest not far away, where eagles stay year round, perhaps because there are several lakes within a few miles to offer sources of fish.

Double-Crested Cormorants

Double-crested cormorant with spread wings on a stump and fallen log in the water of a lake. US. Betsy Kelleher

Many years ago, I knew nothing about double-crested cormorants, until I saw one when we vacationed at Kentucky Lake. And then a few years ago, I saw one closer to home in a nearby lake. Now I see two or three a day, sometimes five in the lake behind our mobile home! I’m not sure if I saw them before without knowing what they were, or if there actually are more of these birds coming here now.
